What is the mode?

In statistics, the mode or modal value is the most repetitive value of a data set. The mode is the number that has the maximum frequency as compared to the other elements of the data set. Mode is one of the measurements of the central tendency along with mean and median.

The mode is an exceptional measurement, sometimes the set doesn’t contain “mode”.  

How to calculate the mode?

As we know, the mode is the most repetitive value in the data set. The most frequently occurring value is known as the mode of a set. We can calculate it by following the below steps:

• Check whether the contains a repeating number or not.
• Arrange the numbers in ascending order
• The number that is repeating frequently, will be the mode of that particular set.
• If there is no repeating number then the set doesn’t have a modal value.
• A set can have more than one modal value.

In the following examples, the method of evaluating the mode is explained briefly:

Example 1:

Find the mode/modal value of the set 1, 5, 65, 77, 23, 54, 6, 5, 9, 5, 32, 6

Solution:

Step 1: Re-arrange the numbers in ascending order.

1, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 9, 23, 32, 54, 65, 77

Step 2: Check the most repetitive value.  

In the arranged set, “5” is repeated three times and “6” is repeated two times.

So, the mode is 5, 6.

Example 2:

Find the modal value of the set 8, 45, 64, 22, 76, 55, 75, 753, 34, 23, 75, 93, 10, 345, 54

Solution:

Step 1: Re-arrange the numbers in ascending order.

8, 10, 22, 23, 34, 45, 54, 55, 64, 75, 75, 76, 93, 345, 753

Step 2: Check the most repetitive value. 

In the arranged set, “75” is repeated two times.

So, the mode is 75.
