Mean calculator

Mean calculator is used to find the average value of the list of comma-separated values. This average calculator provides the solution with steps in a couple of seconds.

What is mean?

In mathematics and statistics, the average value of the set of comma-separated values is known as the mean. It calculates the sum of all the data values and divides the sum by the total number of data values.

In central tendency, the mean, median, and mode are widely used to find the average of the set of data. It is denoted by “” and read as x bar.

Formula of mean

The formula for calculating the mean is:

mean formula

How to calculate the mean?

Follow the below example to learn how to calculate the mean.

Example 1:

Find the mean of the given data.

1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Solution

Step 1: Calculate the sum of the given data values and write the total number of data values.

 Sum of data value = Σx = 1 + 3 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9

Sum of data value = Σx = 39

Total number of observations = N = 7

Step 2: Take the formula of the mean and substitute the above values in it.

Mean = sum of observations/total number

Mean = 39/7

Mean = 5.57

Example 2:

A Batsman scores 15, 115, 56, 78, 93, and 200 in his last 6 matches. Calculate the average of the score.

Step 1: Calculate the sum of the score of six innings.

Sum of the score = 15 + 115 + 56 + 78 + 93 + 200

Total innings = 6

Step 2: Take the formula of the mean and substitute the above values in it.

Mean = sum of the scores/total innings

Mean = 557/6

Mean = 92.84

Hence the average score of the batsmen is 92.84

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why do we calculate Mean?

We calculate the mean or average of numbers to measure central tendency. It can be used to represent a typical value and serve as a yardstick for observations.

2. What is the fastest way to find the mean?

You can find the mean of the data set in the fastest way by the following 2 steps:

  • Find the sum of the values by adding them all up.
  • Divide the sum by the number of values in the data set.
